Programs: Special Workshops & Events

These workshops are open to individuals with cancer and their families. No registration is necessary except where noted. Programs begin promptly as scheduled.

Cancer and the Workplace
A discussion of rights and protections available to employees with cancer. We’ll discuss relevant laws that address discrimination issues, the impact of job changes on health insurance and medical leave issues. Expressing Yourself Through Art!
We will explore with paints and/or oil pastels as we bring out on paper the world within ourselves. This workshop is for everyone – no experience
necessary! Just bring your love of the creative process and see what unfolds. Kathleen Klein is an art therapist and a cancer survivor who has worked at Children‘s Hospital and is currently working with adults in the Elder Arts Program.

Tamoxifen and Beyond: Part l – Prevention
Join Ursula Matulonis, MD, of Harvard Medical School and DFCI for a discussion of the risk factors for breast cancer and how to best minimize them. This presentation will address the use of Tamoxifen, a known breast cancer prevention medication. We’ll also discuss alternatives to Tamoxifen.

Healthy Cooking
Learn how to prepare healthy foods by sampling simple macrobiotic recipes. Taught by Warren Kramer, lecturer, counselor and faculty member of the Kushi Institute.

Comedy Night
Did you laugh enough on April Fools’ Day? Here’s a chance to get in a few more giggles and take some time to laugh about your life! Debbie Dorsey, of "No Hair Day" will entertain with her unique stand up act, followed by a time for sharing of those hard to believe, funny moments along the journey in the world of cancer - or just in the world!

Join us for the first Annual Young Adult Symposium, open to all young adult cancer survivors, caretakers or those who have lost someone close to them from cancer. The symposium will provide a forum for discussion and education about the issues faced by young adults, ages 18 to 30, dealing with cancer.

Strength for Caring
In this workshop Judith Kahn, LICSW of New England Medical Center, and Lucette Robinson, NP, Oncology Nurse Educator from Ortho Biotech, will address the many concerns of people who are caregivers for loved ones with cancer. Topics to be covered include pain and symptom management, understanding the range of family members’ emotions, managing stress and finding necessary resources. The goal of the program is to improve total care of the person with cancer, reduce the burden of caregiving and enhance the positive aspects of the caregiving experience.
A light supper will be served.

Tea: The Healing Cup
Join Jennifer Geronaitis, cancer survivor and founder of Tea Time World Wide, for her second workshop on the benefits of tea for people recovering from cancer. This workshop will include new teas for those who had previously attended along with information about “Essiac”, an Indian herbal tea believed to have specific benefits for cancer patients.

Feng Shui
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement that helps to optimize energy flow through your home and work environment. Lyn Taylor, Feng Shui practitioner, will discuss how your home affects your health and share simple modifications you can make to improve well-being.

Look Good/Feel Better
For an evening of fun, join stylists coordinated by the American Cancer Society, to learn how to use make-up, turbans, scarves, and wigs to enhance physical appearance during treatment. Limited to 12 participants who are actively in treatment.

Tamoxifen and Beyond: Part ll – Tamoxifen and New Alternatives
In this workshop, Ursula Matulones, MD will focus on the use of Tamoxifen, a commonly used medication, to prevent breast cancer recurrences. Alternative medications will also be discussed as well as factors to be considered when deciding on a medication.
