KIDS' PROGRAMS

A diagnosis of cancer affects the entire family. Children have many questions and feelings when a parent has cancer and finding the right way to talk with them is a major concern of parents. Meeting other children who are dealing with the same concerns can be a great relief to children. Having other parents with cancer to talk with can help parents explore how they can best manage the many issues that can arise when trying to take care of a family and get treatment for cancer.

Kids Count Too!
Saturdays, 1-3PM, January 20, February 10, RSVP required 1-week in advance

For families with children ages 5-12, in which a parent has cancer. Children will participant in an activity relevant to living with cancer in the family, while parents have a chance to talk with one another about the challenges of parenting during the cancer experience. Facilitated by TWC staff.

Teens who have a parent with cancer participate in the program as “teen mentors.” They assist in facilitating the program and meet with clinicians to debrief after the sessions. While it is difficult to get teens to find time to come to a support group for themselves, in this program they come to help the younger children and, in that way, learn more about how they themselves can better cope. The teens often form relationships with one another that go beyond the program.
