Held on November 4, 2002 the inaugural When a Parent Has Cancer conference was a resounding success. Over 100 teachers, social workers, nurses, and guidance counselors gathered to learn how they can lend support and make a difference in the life of a child coping with a parent’s illness. Attendees gained a basic understanding of cancer - its demographics, current treatments and types. They received insight into effectively communicating with a child whose parent is diagnosed with cancer, by understanding children’s reactions, worries and feelings. A panel of parents and teens coping with parental cancer shared their stories, offered various ideas on how to lend support and stressed that each situation and child is different. The Conference also offered an opportunity for attendees to discuss and address their real-life situations and specific concerns and issues. This session was invaluable for future school and conference programming.
