The Parenting Program provides individual consultation to adults being treated for cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital, their spouses, and their children in various inpatient and outpatient settings at MGH. Keeping in mind that parents are experts on their own children, staff members provide guidance about how to explain and discuss the illness with children, how to address common questions and behavior changes, how to prepare children for hospital visits, as well as how to cope with concerns about a particular child. For more information call PACT at 617-724-3923. Hurricane Voices' annotated bibliography recommends books that educate, diffuse anxiety, and help families cope when a parent has cancer. From picture books to chapter books for children and adults, these carefully chosen materials are valuable resources both at home and in school libraries. The Helpful Hints section of the Family Reading List gives advice to parents and/or school personnel on how to customize the books to fit individual needs of the children in their lives.
