Sessions Adult Cancer 101 Gaining knowledge about the most common adult cancers is an important first step towards understanding the individual needs of cancer patients and their families. In this presentation Jon Du Bois, MD will discuss basic cancer facts, staging and diagnoses, and general treatment options. In addition, he will provide information about treatment side-effects and their possible impact on the patient’s day-to-day life. Jon S. Du Bois, M.D., is a member of Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology and practicing Hematologist-Oncologist at the Bethke Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA. He is Chair of Emerson's Cancer Committee and Physician Leader of the Schwartz Center Rounds. He also serves as the Chair of the Professional Advisory Board of The Wellness Committee. From Home to Homeroom: Panel of Parents and Students The diagnosis of cancer in a parent has a profound effect on the family. The roles and routines that naturally flow from day-to-day are suddenly disrupted causing stress and confusion. On this panel, students and parents who have personally experienced this challenge will share their stories and their hard-earned wisdom about how schools can be most supportive to students and their families. Communication Skills for Difficult Conversations Patients and family members who are coping with a serious illness value honest information and empathic relationships with their extended support networks. This presentation will introduce general principles and an approach to difficult conversations relevant for school personnel when parents have diagnoses of cancer. Dr. Meyer will draw from her clinical experience at Children's Hospital, her research on parent perspectives and priorities, and work developing innovative educational workshops. Elaine C. Meyer, PhD, RN is Director of the PERCS Program at Children's Hospital, Boston. She also serves as the Associate Director of the Institute for Professionalism and Ethical Practice. Additionally, Dr. Meyer chairs the Psychosocial Committee at Children's and is an Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School. Communication Beyond the Chalkboard: Panel of School Personnel The panelists will discuss the communication challenges that are faced when a student’s parent is diagnosed with cancer. Examples of these challenges include: What is the extent of the role schools should play? Which member(s) of the staff should be interacting with the child around their parent’s illness, and how? How can the school best support the family? Are there community-wide interventions that schools can initiate? Ages and Stages: Addressing a Range of Reactions: Breakout Session Depending on their age and stage of development, children understand illness and cancer in different ways. In the context of a case study this problem-based break out session will explore how to utilize communication skills to address a range of reactions. Participants will discuss children’s’ various reactions to illness; what words are helpful for children to hear and incorporate into their own vocabulary, and how to meet the needs of the individual child.
